Home Less Kids

Inspiration: There was a heart wrenching story on the evening news recounting the plight of young children when their parents fall on hard times.

There are many kids who are living without a home, without a sense of real safety.

They are our future, so what does our future hold?

Death Spiral

Inspiration: Now that we have started this new year, we will hear more and more about the Mayan Prophecy that this is the year –2012 – that time will end.

Does it mean the destruction of the planet? Does it mean a new start? Does it mean they just stopped with the calendar because life got in the way?

Living in this time, none of us can say. Play poem below.

Haunted Eyes

Inspiration: My inspiration can come from anywhere. The book Faces Revealed by Dr. Paul Ekman did it here.

It’s all about his research on how seven universal emotions show up on our faces. There was a TV show called, Lie To Me that took it to the extreme. It was a dramatic extension of the research but it was interesting.

The character in that show had haunted eyes. Play poem below.

Code

Inspiration: Technology is moving deeper into our lives and every few weeks a new upgrade is released for one of our tech toys. Most of the time they are great, but every once in while a change is made that disrupts everything.

As I was thinking about that, it occurred to me that we do that in our relationships, too.

Ancestry

Inspiration: At a folk life festival in Washington DC, I saw many cultures blend, mix and complement.

Each said something about a journey our ancestors must have taken.

I was moved to write Ancestry.

Trapped in our truth?

Inspiration: Sometimes you are with someone and they say something that rings so true it startles you.

Trapped In Our Truth was motivated by a phrase one participant used during a diversity training session.

His core point was that being open is the only way to deal with different opinions. He said, “We don’t want to be trapped in our truth.”

Light Rain

Inspiration: Sometimes the greatest inspiration just comes from looking around on an ordinary day.

Summer fog. Summer mist. Summer rain.

Wake Up

Inspiration: There are small things that happen in a day that help us to “wake up.” The smell of a flowing stream. The chirp of a squirrel. A slip on a small sliver of ice. Small moments that make adrenaline stream through our bodies and open our eyes a little wider. Small signals that we need to pay attention to in a little different way. We need to…

Childhood

Inspiration: This past week I had the pleasure of being with a group of people who were reflecting on the early years of their lives. It reminded me of a short poem I wrote recently. It’s a poem with few words that carries the weight of a lifetime.

It is a haiku. Play poem below.

Living Shadow

Inspiration: Poets often see~and see through~a situation. We look at the levels behind, the levels below, seeking the essence of the event. Sometimes we can do the same with people. I frequently meet very talented people who are living only a shadow of their potential. One person seemed to carry that energy so deeply, I could see it everywhere. So I wrote: Living Shadow.
