Events Live

Inspiration: In a recent telephone conversation I had dejavu. I felt I had had that conversation before, not once or twice, but many times.

It felt like a movie I’d watched too many times and a part of me was asking, ‘why are you watching this again.’

I realized it was a ‘memory loop’. Something my friend could not, or perhaps would not release to time. It reminded me of this poem that I wrote a few months ago.

6 Shorts

Inspiration: At any moment, thoughts begin to circle in my mind. Sometimes there is a theme. If I capture them quickly they leave me alone. If I ignore them for too long they stalk me. The good thing is, on those days, the poems don’t have to be long. Below is an example of 6 very short poems that seem to form a theme — a moment in time.

A friend of mine joked recently, Can’t you have an insignificant moment?

I thought about it for about a second and said, No. We can have light moments, happy moments, carefree moments, but as long as we have breath we can’t have an insignificant moment.

He laughed at me and said, You are such a Hart!

I said nothing, but thought, Yes, I have the Hart-of-a-Poet.

I hope you enjoy these 6 Shorts.

Black History: Red~White~Blue

Inspiration: Identity is frequently fluid, forming and reforming the more we come to know about ourselves. When PBS aired a number of programs about the Human Genome Project in 2005, I was intrigued.

I could now discover some DNA answers to identity questions of where we, our family, and therefor I, really came from. I learned that my DNA is 60~20~20.

60% African

20% Native American

20% European

100% Spirit   ~~  100% Human  ~~   100% Living  ~ Loving  ~ Learning  ~ Exploring  ~ Life!

Those answers confirmed early family stories of growing up in the border state of Kentucky. They also caused me to ask even more DNA questions …

The challenge with questions is,once we start asking them there always seems to be one more.

As my internal tribe ~began to dialogue, inside~a spiritual question came alive~

Change and Values

Inspiration: I was working with a group of executives preparing for what would happen after their president retired. The normal emotions of fear, anxiety, and frustration mixed with the how’s this going to affect me strategies for moving forward.

I was impressed by the courage, honesty and difficult discussions that this group of leaders chose to dive into head first. One night after a tough day of fearless authenticity, I wrote this poem about the core message that came out of their work.

Bigger than the boundaries of our beliefs

Inspiration: This poem is dedicated to America and to President Barack Obama and his family.

I have been away from recording for a while, and was lovingly chastised by a blog visitor who I ran into at my video store. He recognized me and said, “You have some very good poems on your blog, but you don’t update it often do you?”

I took the hint and told him to expect new poems more frequently. I am proud that this is the post that marks my new beginning.

When the universe pulls a reality through us

That is bigger than the boundaries of our beliefs

We have Soul Quake

I hope you enjoy this one.

In honor of our election

Inspiration: I sat inspired by the millions of us who turned out to vote in our presidential election. I, like many, struggled to find the right words to describe the moment. It was on the new day of November 5th that this poem flowed from my soul:

Just for one day

A poem to honor the election of president-elect Barack Obama

Just for one day, let  me breath in the hope that this moment holds, let me feel the evolution in a country’s soul.

Tomorrow will dawn with a blaring white light, showing all the problems that led to this one historic night…

Those are the beginning lines of the poem. You can hear the complete poem below. I hope it helps you reconnect with your unique and special moments during this historic election.

When the hope starts to fade in the days to come. When the challenges begin. When you need to reconnect, I invite you to come back and listen to this poem again and again.

Memories that need a voice

Inspiration: I was sitting around one day and this thought came to mind:

Memories that need a voice

Are of the most patient kind

They rest in the corners of the heart

And worm their way into the mind…

Blue

Inspiration: I was thinking back to one of the first poems I ever wrote. I was in the first grade. It was a poem for Mother’s Day. It went: With a smile so bright and eyes so blue, Mother I love you. The whole class had to write the same poem. My mother’s eyes are brown. My teacher said it didn’t matter. It mattered to me.

With a smile so bright

And eyes so blue

Mother I love you.

But my mother’s eyes are not blue…

The Listener

Inspiration: Long before I knew of my Native American heritage, I was interested in Native American traditions. Many traditions recognize four levels of energy and information that make up human life. There is the realm of the body–serpent. There is the realm of the mind–jaguar. There is the realm of the soul–hummingbird. There is the realm of the spirit–eagle. I wondered what we would hear if we could listen at all of these levels. This is what I learned:

Listening deep to the flow of the undertow

I hear so many things people don’t want me to know

Oh, I’m afraid

Oh, I’m alone

No, I can’t do this on my own…
